Padres break out offensively, beat Giants 7-1 to avoid sweep

SAN DIEGO (KYMA, KECY) —The San Diego Padres found their offense Wednesday night, picking up a 7-1 win over the San Francisco Giants at Petco Park to close out their opening homestand.

After struggling to start the season, scoring three runs or fewer in each of their first five games, the Padres finally broke through with a season-high in both runs and hits.

“This is the kind of baseball that we expect to play,” Gavin Sheets said. “This is the game that looks like our identity.”

Manager Craig Stammen made adjustments to the lineup heading into the game, moving Fernando Tatis Jr. back into the leadoff spot and shifting a red-hot Ramón Laureano into the middle of the order—moves that paid off immediately.

Tatis, Laureano, and Sheets all contributed offensively, helping spark a Padres lineup that had been searching for consistency early in the season.

Sheets, who had struggled to open the year, delivered a big performance with two doubles and a walk, while Laureano added his second home run of the season during a four-run eighth inning that put the game away.

“Today was an example of what we could be,” Stammen said. “The type of team that we expected—and have.”

On the mound, Nick Pivetta set the tone early, allowing just one hit over five scoreless innings while striking out eight.

“It was just me being me and getting consistently back in the zone,” Pivetta said.

The Padres also capitalized on early Giants errors to take control before breaking things open late, with Mason Miller closing it out to secure the win.

While the Padres finish their first homestand at 2-4, the win provided a much-needed boost—and a glimpse of what this team could look like moving forward.

“We’re going to play better here at Petco,” Stammen said. “This was probably an outlier.”
