WNBA Champion Kara Braxton dies at 43

Braxton was involved in a fatal car accident

COBB COUNTY, Ga. (KYMA) - Former Phoenix Mercury center Kara Braxton, a two-time WNBA champion, died Saturday evening following a single-vehicle crash in Atlanta.

According to officials, Braxton was driving a 2023 Ford Mustang on Interstate 285 at approximately 5 p.m. Eastern when the vehicle struck a concrete median.

She was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital after the crash, but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

Braxton was selected by the Detroit Shock with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2005 WNBA Draft and went on to play 10 seasons in the league.

Over her career, she suited up for the Detroit Shock, Tulsa Shock, Phoenix Mercury and New York Liberty.

Known for her physical presence in the paint, Braxton helped establish herself as a key contributor during her time in the WNBA and was part of championship-winning teams during her career.

Braxton was 43.
