Chris Paul announces retirement after 21 seasons

Paul looks to prioritize time with family after announcing retirement.

PHOENIX, Ariz. (KYMA) - NBA star Chris Paul announced he is stepping away from basketball after 21 seasons in the league, signaling the end of one of the most accomplished careers by a point guard in NBA history.

The announcement came shortly after reports that the Toronto Raptors had waived the veteran guard. Paul spent the majority of his career with the Los Angeles Clippers and later played three seasons with the Phoenix Suns, helping guide Phoenix to an NBA Finals appearance during his tenure.

In a post on Instagram, Paul wrote, “It’s time for me to show up for others and in other ways,” referencing his desire to spend more time with his family.

Known by the nickname “Point God,” Paul leaves the game with a résumé that includes 12 All-Star selections, 11 All-NBA team honors and nine All-Defensive team nods. He was named the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2006 and consistently ranked among the league’s elite floor generals throughout his career.

Paul finishes his career ranked second all-time in both assists and steals, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest point guards to play the game.
