PHOENIX (KYMA, KECY) - The Phoenix Suns have fired head coach Mike Budenholzer after one season.
The Suns finished 36-46 and failed to make the playoffs this season. Phoenix started the season 8-1, however things took turn for the worse. The Suns lost nine of their last 10 games and missed the play-in all together.
"Competing at the highest level remains our goal, and we failed to meet expectations this season. Our fans deserve better. Change is needed," the Suns said in a statement.
In the offseason, the Arizona native Budenholzer signed a five-year $50 million deal with the Suns. Budenholzer won a championship as the head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks in 2021. He is also a two-time NBA Coach of the Year during his career.
This makes it now three straight seasons where Phoenix has changed head coaches. They are now paying all three coaches (Budenholzer, Monty Williams and Frank Vogel) to not coach the team.
The Suns now head into the offseason in search of a new coach and with trade rumors surrounding Kevin Durant.
