Morgan’s Game Day Grub with Emilio Bojorquez
Former Yuma Catholic standout Emilio Bojorquez shares his game-day food traditions on Morgan's Game Day Grub
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Former Yuma Catholic standout Emilio Bojorquez may have excelled in wrestling, cross country and track and field, but when it came to competition, one pregame tradition rarely changed.
During the second episode of Morgan's Game Day Grub, Bojorquez sat down to discuss everything from his favorite pregame meal and food superstitions to the snack he learned to avoid on tournament days.
For Bojorquez, consistency was key before wrestling competitions.
Whenever the Shamrocks traveled through Gila Bend for road meets, the team made the same stop — and Bojorquez ordered the same meal every time: a meatball sub from Subway with spinach and American cheese.
"I like to eat carbs a lot because wrestling is super draining," Bojorquez said. "I feel like I perform pretty good, so when I perform pretty good, I don't want to change anything."
Not every food choice worked out as well.
Because wrestling tournaments often lasted all day, Bojorquez sometimes relied on concession stand food between matches. Hot dogs quickly became something he learned to avoid.
"I've eaten a couple of hot dogs and felt terrible going into a match," he said. "I definitely didn't perform well."
Away from competition, Bojorquez said one dish stands above the rest.
If he could eat one meal every day, he would choose pho, citing its fresh ingredients and aroma as what first drew him to the Vietnamese soup after growing up eating instant noodles.
"I always liked how fresh it smells," Bojorquez said. "I love the flavor and all the herbs that go into it."
Bojorquez also admitted he's willing to bend the rules during movie nights.
Instead of buying theater concessions, he and his girlfriend sneak in food — most recently a meal from Raising Cane's.
"We'll throw it in her purse or put it in a bag," Bojorquez said with a laugh.
The lighthearted conversation highlighted another side of one of Yuma Catholic's recent graduates, giving fans a look beyond athletics and into the routines and traditions that helped shape his career.
