Yuma Special Olympics athletes compete in area bocce tournament
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Special Olympics athletes in Yuma gathered this weekend at the Pacific Avenue Athletic Complex to compete in a bocce tournament.
The event brought together teams of three athletes each, vying for gold and silver medals while showcasing their skills in one of the oldest sports still played today.
Participation in the tournament automatically qualifies each athlete for the upcoming statewide bocce competition, scheduled to take place in Surprise, Arizona, later this month. For many of the competitors, this event is a major highlight of the year.
"It's very important to them," said Diana Flermoen, Bocce Head Coach. "Some of them don't participate in other sports in Special Olympics, so this is their annual trip together as athletes."
Adding to the supportive atmosphere were volunteers from Kofa High School’s ROTC program, who helped the event run more smoothly. Their involvement was appreciated by both coaches and athletes.
"They are such a blessing to the team," Flermoen said. "They're always here to volunteer and just be part of our community."
ROTC member Lorenzo Contreras expressed gratitude for the opportunity to give back.
"It's actually more of an honor for me to come out here and help," he said.
While the tournament included stiff competition, for many, the real reward was the sense of camaraderie and fun.
"I don't come out here for the medals," said athlete David Gross. "I come out here to have fun and enjoy being with my friends."
By the end of the tournament, athletes walked away with new memories, earned medals, and secured their spots at the Arizona Special Olympics Fall Games, set for October 24 and 25 in Surprise.
