Somerton honors Carolina Moreno for outstanding achievements

SOMERTON, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – The City of Somerton has officially recognized one of its own.

During the August 18, 2025 Regular Council Meeting, Mayor Gerardo "Jerry" Anaya issued a proclamation declaring Carolina Moreno Day in honor of her accomplishments in both athletics and education.

Moreno's journey has been defined by discipline, determination, and years of hard work. Her résumé is one of the most decorated to ever come out of Somerton. She is a:

  • Two-time Arizona State Champion
  • Three-time Arizona State Placer
  • Four-time Collegiate All-American
  • Three-time Collegiate National Champion
  • Three-time Cascade Conference Champion
  • Three-time U.S. Open All-American
  • 2024 Olympic Trials Qualifier
  • Junior National Team Member

Beyond her athletic achievements, Moreno's commitment to academics has made her a role model for future generations, inspiring young athletes from Kofa High School, in Somerton and beyond.

In reflecting on the recognition, Moreno said, "I worked really hard and I don't know if I ever pictured myself like winning a national title or having bigger success, but just working really hard. It just kind of happened on its own. Sometimes it happens in the least expected moments, especially if you're doing all the right things. Just trust in the process and know that everything happens for a reason and your time will come."

City leaders say Moreno's accomplishments elevate Somerton's pride on the national stage, showcasing the potential of local athletes who stay committed to their goals.
