Joshua Holmes 3v3 Basketball Classic: Honoring a legacy through community and sport
EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Southwest High School hosted the Second Annual Joshua L. Holmes 3v3 Basketball Classic Saturday, a heartfelt event honoring the legacy of Joshua Lavell Holmes.
The tournament not only celebrated Joshua's passion for basketball but also served as a fundraiser to support families battling cancer in the region.
Joshua's sister, Neva Holmes, reflected on the significance of the event, stating, "It's a way for us to honor him, and it brings healing to us by seeing people play the game that he loves so much."
She added, "So it's a way we can connect with my brother."
The tournament has seen remarkable growth since its inception. The inaugural event in 2024 featured 41 teams and raised over $5,000 for cancer support.
Building on this success, the 2025 tournament expanded to over 60 teams, furthering its mission to provide financial, medical, and emotional assistance to those affected by cancer.
Participants ranged from high school freshmen to community leaders, all united by a common goal: To honor Joshua's memory and support the cause.
Local resident Jake Lyerly shared his enthusiasm, saying, "It's a pretty cool tournament bringing the community together, all the high schools." He added, "We just beat a senior team right now so we feel pretty good."
For Hector Tarango, who had the privilege of coaching Joshua, attending the tournament is a meaningful way to give back.
He remarked, "It's an honor to be here to give back to the community, volunteer our time, and just watch great athletes play basketball."
Tarango continued, "I had the opportunity to coach Josh Holmes when he was in high school...Great athlete, great person."
He concluded, "I was born and raised here and I'm always gonna give back."
Through every pass, play, and point scored, the Joshua L. Holmes 3v3 Basketball Classic continues to honor a beloved community member and provides vital support to families facing cancer.
The tournament stands as a testament to Joshua's enduring impact and the community's commitment to helping those in need.
