Scots flag football win CIF-SDS Division 2 championship with 32-12 victory

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KYMA) - The Vincent Memorial Scots are Division 2 champions after defeating the Escondido Charter White Tigers 32-12 to cap off a historic postseason run.

Entering the playoffs as the No. 12 seed, the Scots overcame an early setback before taking control of the championship matchup.

After an opening interception by Escondido Charter's Victoria Powers led to an early touchdown, Vincent Memorial responded with quarterback Azul Trujillo connecting with Valentina Lopez for a touchdown to take a 7-6 lead.

The Scots continued building momentum as Trujillo found Gala Cervantes for a deep touchdown, giving Vincent Memorial a two-possession advantage.

Trujillo later connected with Jessica Manriquez for another score before finding Cervantes again in the third quarter. Manriquez added another touchdown reception as the Scots continued to pull away.

Co-head coach Felipe Moreno said he was proud of the team's ability to remain focused despite the challenges they faced throughout the season.

"I feel so proud because a lot of things happen on the way to the championship. And the ladies always stay focused on the matters, play football," Moreno said.

Co-head coach Mike Chavez highlighted the connection between Trujillo and Cervantes, who became a major part of the Scots' success after Cervantes returned to the team.

"These girls are very good. As a matter of fact, Cervantes, she wasn't playing with us at the beginning, and we were able to get her back on the team. And because we know she's a key player on offense and defense, Azul and her, the reason they have such a good connection. These girls have been playing this sport for a very long time," Chavez said.

Vincent Memorial finished the championship matchup with a 32-12 victory, completing its run through the Division 2 bracket and bringing home the championship as the No. 12 seed.

The Scots' championship performance capped off a special season for the program, led by the connection between Trujillo and Cervantes.
