Imperial Valley teams continue postseason push in baseball and softball

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Playoff action continued across the Imperial Valley this week as several baseball and softball teams battled through the CIF San Diego Section postseason.

Central enjoyed success on both the baseball and softball diamonds in Division IV competition. The Spartans softball team earned a narrow 6-5 road victory to advance, while the Central baseball team handled Mar Vista 6-0 at home behind a strong all-around performance.

In Division III softball, top-seeded Brawley rolled past Coronado 11-2. The Wildcats broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning and cruised the rest of the way to continue their postseason run.

Brawley baseball, however, came up short against Helix in Division II playoff action. The Wildcats trailed 5-1 before rallying back with a grand slam to tie the game, but ultimately fell to the Scotties. Brawley will now face Bonita Vista in the double-elimination bracket.

In Open Division baseball, top-seeded Cathedral Catholic shut out Southwest 7-0. Cathedral Catholic features Shohei Darvish, the son of San Diego Padres pitcher Yu Darvish, on its roster. Southwest will continue postseason play Friday against Rancho Bernardo.

Palo Verde advanced in Division III baseball after receiving a forfeit victory against La Jolla because of reported bus issues that prevented La Jolla from making the trip. The top-seeded Yellow Jackets will host Ramona in the next round as the playoffs continue to run through Blythe.

Elsewhere, Vincent Memorial fell to Calvin Christian 4-2 in Division V-AA baseball. The Scots will now face Liberty Charter in an elimination game Friday.
