Yuma Catholic baseball dominates opener to take playoff series lead

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Yuma Catholic baseball opened its postseason series in dominant fashion Tuesday night, rolling past Northwest Christian 12-0 in a five-inning run-rule victory.

The Shamrocks wasted no time setting the tone, scoring four runs in the first inning and adding three more in the second to take early control. They then put the game away with a five-run fifth inning to seal the shutout win.

At the plate, Erik Topete led the way, finishing 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Daniel Ruiz also came up big, driving in three runs, including a key three-run home run that helped break the game open.

On the mound, Jose Alatorre was lights out. The senior threw a complete game one-hitter, allowing just one hit while striking out five over five shutout innings.

With the win, Yuma Catholic takes a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.

The Shamrocks will be back in action Thursday with a chance to close it out and advance to the State Championship game.
