Yuma County athletes qualify for state track and field championships

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Several Yuma County athletes are headed to the AIA State Track and Field Championships after strong performances at divisional meets this past weekend.

Leading the way for Cibola is long-distance standout Caius Lastra, who turned in impressive times in both distance events.

Lastra ran the mile in 4:21 and finished the two-mile race in just over 9 minutes and 20 seconds, securing his spot at state this upcoming weekend.

Kofa will be represented by Adeleigh Jensen, the Kings' lone state qualifier. Jensen earned her trip to the state meet in discus after a throw of 114 feet at divisionals.

In the hurdles, Yuma Criminals' Legend Redmond also punched her ticket to state competition. Redmond posted a 15.29 time in the 100-meter hurdles during Division III competition, earning the 16th overall seed heading into the state championships.

On the boys side, Gila Ridge's Joshua Zanovitch continued his strong season with a second-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles and a third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles at divisionals.

With those performances, Zanovitch will now compete against the state’s top hurdlers this weekend.

Several athletes across Yuma County competed at divisionals, with a select group advancing to the final meet of the season at the state championships.
