Sidewinders defeat Holtville 5-0 backed by good pitching and excellent defense

San Luis wins two straight while Holtville slides

SAN LUIS, Ariz. (KYMA) - The San Luis Sidewinders continued its strong start to the season with a 5-0 victory over the Holtville Vikings on Tuesday at The Pit.

The Sidewinders improved to 6-1-1 on the year behind a dominant outing from starting pitcher Canek Ron, who tossed six shutout innings while striking out five.

Ron set the tone early, freezing a Holtville batter with a fastball for one of his strikeouts in the second inning as San Luis controlled the pace of the game from the mound.

Holtville briefly flashed its defense in the bottom of the inning when catcher Davian Ambrocio fired a throw to George Ochoa to catch a San Luis runner attempting to steal, ending the threat.

But the Sidewinders broke through later in the inning. San Luis scored its first runs on a bases-loaded walk followed by a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded, giving the home team an early 2-0 advantage.

San Luis added to its lead in the fourth inning when Carlos Gonzalez delivered an RBI single to shallow center field that brought home Harry De La Cruz to make it 3-0.

The Sidewinders continued to capitalize on mistakes moments later when a wild throw sailed over the first baseman’s head, allowing Gonzalez to score from second base.

San Luis added another run in the fifth inning to seal the 5-0 victory.

With the win, the Sidewinders improved to 6-1-1, while Holtville fell to 3-4 on the season.
