Calexico’s playoff run ends in CIF Division I Semifinals
CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA) - The Calexico Bulldogs were just one win away from playing for a CIF Division I title, welcoming in 10-seed Point Loma a team that had already pulled off multiple upsets to reach the semifinals.
Point Loma proved early they weren’t done yet.
After a scoreless start, the Pointers drew a penalty that led to a penalty kick opportunity for Bryce Caffo. He capitalized, burying the shot to give Point Loma a 1-0 lead and continuing their surprising postseason surge.
Calexico’s defense responded well in the first half, settling in and limiting the Pointers to that lone goal. The Bulldogs kept things tight, leaning on strong midfield play and several impressive saves from their keeper to stay within striking distance.
But offensively, Calexico struggled to find rhythm. Every time the Bulldogs looked to build momentum, Point Loma answered — including a key defensive clear from Ezekiel Varela that erased a promising scoring chance.
The match remained competitive deep into the second half, but Calexico couldn’t generate the breakthrough it needed. Point Loma added insurance goals late, sealing a 3-1 victory and ending the Bulldogs’ season.
Still, it was an impressive playoff run for the sixth-seeded Bulldogs, who battled their way to the Division I semifinals and came within one game of a championship appearance.
