Yuma Catholic pulls away from Sabino in 3A playoff win
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Shamrocks are rolling.
Yuma Catholic took control early and never looked back in a 58-43 victory over Sabino to advance in the 3A state tournament.
Sabino entered at 16-12, but the red-hot Shamrocks dictated the tempo from the start. Yuma Catholic carried a 21-12 lead into halftime and tightened its grip in the second half.
Noe Zamudio facilitated the offense beautifully, swinging the ball to Darwin Welsh for a three-pointer from the right wing that pushed the lead to double digits.
Sabino struggled to generate offense in the third quarter, scoring just seven points — all from the free-throw line.
Meanwhile, Zamudio continued to orchestrate, finding Santiago Vazquez Lima down low for easy finishes. Vazquez Lima led the way with 23 points and seven rebounds in a dominant performance.
Zamudio later knocked down a three of his own as Yuma Catholic extended its advantage to 34-19 entering the fourth quarter before cruising to the 15-point win.
After the game, Vazquez Lima emphasized the team’s chemistry and preparation as keys to their success.
Yuma Catholic now awaits its Round Two matchup in the 3A state tournament, looking to continue its strong postseason run.
