The Hawks hold on to win despite late push from Sidewinders

Gila Ridge snapped a two-game losing streak with the win over San Luis

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Despite a late push from San Luis, the Gila Ridge Hawks beat the Sidewinders 49-36 on Monday night at Hawks Gym.

Coming out of the break, the Hawks had a 28-20 lead, fueled by a 20-point first quarter explosion, and it was looking like they would run away with the game, but the Sidewinders didn't go away easily.

At one point, they were able to cut the lead within 10 point, but Gila Ridge made sure to lock in defensively.

"They started getting a run and then during a timeout we just talked about not letting them get a run and putting belt," said sophomore Forward Jayden Waymire. "We cut that off real quick."

Waymire would score a game high 17 points en route to the Hawks's victory and was able to be put in such a good position because of her teammates.

"We spend a lot of time together. I take Ari to practice every day, Yesenia I see constantly," Waymire said. "Those are the two I have the most chemistry with, and they know where I am, I know where they are."

With the win, the Hawks snap a two-game losing streak and advance to 8-10 on the year. They will host Yuma High this Thursday.

Meanwhile, San Luis drops their seventh straight as they look to travel to Cibola on Thursday.
