Gila Ridge pulls away late to defeat Kofa 43–31

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Gila Ridge used defensive pressure and timely scoring to pull away in the second half, defeating Kofa 43–31 in a Yuma-area conference matchup Friday night.

The game remained competitive early, with both teams trading possessions and struggling to find consistent offense. Gila Ridge began to create separation as the night went on, leaning on improved defensive intensity to limit Kofa’s scoring opportunities.

Gila Ridge head coach Caleb VanderBaan said the focus was on execution and growth as the season progresses.

“We ran through some of our stuff and got some good looks,” VanderBaan said. “We didn’t convert as much as we’d like to, but the looks were there. Defensively, our intensity has really picked up, and we’re getting better.”

VanderBaan also credited his team’s willingness to learn and adjust, pointing to their ability to handle new offensive and defensive concepts as a key strength moving forward.

Kofa was led by Michelle Noriega, who finished with a team-high effort despite the loss. Noriega said the game served as a learning experience for the Kings, especially with another matchup against Gila Ridge still ahead later in the season.

“We didn’t win tonight, but it was a great learning experience,” Noriega said. “We play them again later on, and I think we can come back better and learn from our mistakes.”

Noriega added that discipline and effort will be crucial as Kofa looks toward the remainder of the season and a potential playoff push.

“I really do believe we can make it to playoffs,” she said. “It’s up to us — showing discipline, pride, and putting in the work when no one’s looking.”

With the win, Gila Ridge continues to build momentum heading deeper into conference play, while Kofa looks to regroup and apply lessons learned as the season moves forward.
