Sidewinder’s pitcher Juan Pablo Chavez stays local
The San Luis flamethrower signed his Letter of Intent to become a Matador
SAN LUIS, Ariz. (KYMA) - San Luis Sidewinder Juan Pablo Chavez signed his Letter of Intent Monday afternoon to join the Arizona Western Matadors next year as a pitcher.
Chavez was most excited to get to work the the Matador's pitching coach.
"They have really good pitching facilities, and the trainer for pitchers is really good," Chavez said.
Sidewinder's Head Coach Cesar Castillo was super excited for Chavez and the program.
"It’s a great moment for Sidewinder baseball and the tradition of having ballplayers do that, to continue to move on — we’ve had quite a few come through," Castillo said. "He’s one of the few right now on our campus to be signing somewhere to continue to play."
For Castillo, he's excited Chavez is going to his alma matter and can potentially reignite the Sidewinder to Matador pipeline.
"We used to have a great pipeline to send our Sidewinders to go to AWC, and with coach Wente there now, we hope that this continues, for future ballplayers that are in this room as well," Castillo said. "He's the start of a pipeline and hopefully we can continue with this."
Time will tell if the pipeline will continue, but what is set in stone is that Chavez is headed to Arizona Western after his final year as a Sidewinder.
