Yuma Catholic defeats Chino Valley in season finale as they prepare for a postseason run
Both the Shamrocks and Gila Ridge Hawks won their last volleyball games of the season and await for the playoffs for different reasons
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - The Yuma Catholic Shamrocks rolled the Chino Valley Cougars in straight sets on Wednesday night at Carol McElhaney Oden Gym.
Meanwhile, the Gila Ridge Hawks beat rival Cibola Raiders 3-0.
Even though both teams won last night, their outlook on the playoffs are completely different.
Gila Ridge is on the outside looking in, sitting one spot out of the playoffs. If teams in front of the Hawks lose, they have a chance to slip into the final spot in the AIA playoff bracket.
For the Shamrocks, the script is different. They are guaranteed a home playoff game, but if teams in front of them lose as well, they could be bumped up to the eighth spot, giving Yuma Catholic a first round bye in the 3A conference playoffs.
The Shamrocks had an outstanding 31-4 season under Head Coach Averi Davis, who is happy with how the team finished and can't wait for the playoffs.
"We've had a few hiccups here and there, but we finished out the season really strong," Davis said. "We're hoping for that first round by, but if not, we do have that November 4th home game for playoffs."
Getting to the position they are in wasn't a cake walk though, the Shamrocks but in a ton of work behind the scenes throughout the offseason.
"I just try to remind them, 'Hey, that time you put in, it's time to show, and it's been showing.' They've been doing really good," Davis said. "I'm very excited for the playoffs, we're looking pretty good right now."
We will have an update next week on which Yuma County teams made the playoffs and will be tracking their games.
