Calipatria sweeps River Valley to advance in CIF playoffs

CALIPATRIA, Calif. (KYMA) - The Calipatria Hornets are moving on in the postseason after a dominant three-set sweep over River Valley Thursday night in the CIF San Diego Section Division V-AA playoffs.

It was a key 4-5 matchup with both teams looking to keep their seasons alive, but the Hornets wasted no time setting the tone taking the first two sets with strong play at the net and crisp setting from Lindsey Lyerly.

In the third, River Valley showed fight early. Vivienne Burnell gave the Leopards a 6-3 edge with a well-placed drop shot that caught Calipatria off guard. But the Hornets quickly regrouped, sparked by Aubree Duenas, who denied the Leopards at the net to swing momentum back in Calipatria's favor.

From there, Savannah Sadberry continued to set the pace, connecting with Janessa Valadez for a powerful kill to put the Hornets up 15-8. Calipatria never looked back, taking the final set and the match, 3-0.

With the victory, the Hornets now advance to face the winner of St. Joseph Academy and Julian for a spot in the Division V-AA semifinals and a chance to keep their championship hopes alive.
