Prep Football team previews: Yuma Criminals
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Year three under Head Coach Armando Mosqueda brings a new challenge for the Yuma Criminals. After two straight 2-8 seasons in Class 3A, the program now finds itself bumped up into the tougher 4A division.
It's a big leap for a team that has struggled to find its footing, but Mosqueda says his players are embracing the underdog role.
"People expect us to fail and we're gonna prove them wrong," Mosqueda said. "We've got a fire under us and we're ready for anything"
The Criminals graduated their most experienced playmakers last season, including standout Andy Mosqueda the team's top receiver, leading tackler, and one of their most versatile athletes. What's left is a young but eager roster, with several players still carving out their identity.
Senior leader Marquis Dixon sees potential in that youth.
"I'm excited...we've got a bunch of younger guys, younger studs. They're going to be really good in a couple of years," Dixon said.
Quarterback Kane Huerta Urbajelo says the simplified system will work in the team’s favor, with playmakers capable of breaking free for big plays.
"Even if we keep it simple, we've got guys who can make something happen," he said.
For the players, the underdog mentality has become a rallying point.
"We may not be the biggest, but I say we've got the most heart," Urbajelo added.
Senior lineman David Argomaniz echos that the Criminals are younger, but points to the willingness of senior players.
"We don't have a ton of seniority but we have the right leaders who want to show up, come to work, and do things the right way," he said.
The schedule won’t do Yuma any favors. The team faces a string of tough local rivals, but Mosqueda and his group insist the challenge is only fueling their drive.
With a hungry young roster and a chip on their shoulder, the Criminals are hoping 2025 is the year the program finally turns a corner.
