Shamrocks Softball shut out Payson, advance in 3A Playoffs

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Yuma Catholic Shamrocks are moving on in the 3A state softball playoffs after a dominant 5-0 shutout win over Payson at home Saturday afternoon.

Fueled by strong defense, timely hitting, and a lights-out performance from senior pitcher Cherish Trujillo, the Rocks handled business in front of a supportive home crowd.

The win sets up a quarterfinal showdown with Valley Christian on Wednesday.

Yuma Catholic got on the board early, scoring in each of the first four innings. Freshman Isabel Rodriguez played a big role at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, including a key double in the second inning to extend the Shamrocks' lead to 3-0.

Alondra Cordova and Adayah Carrillo each added RBI singles as part of Yuma Catholic's 13-hit effort. Junior Kodi Leigh also contributed with a 3-for-4 performance, while senior K. Reynoso scored twice.

On the defensive side, left fielder Faith Donley made a slick catch in the opening frame to set the tone, and third baseman Gracie Finkler shut down a late Payson threat with a diving stop in the sixth.

But the story of the day was Trujillo. The senior right-hander threw a complete-game shutout, scattering just three hits over seven innings and striking out three without allowing a walk.

Yuma Catholic now heads into the next round of the playoffs as the No. 3 seed and will face off against Valley Christian on Wednesday.
