Central boys soccer comes back in downpour
Central's incredible run continues as they take down Laguna Beach in the CIF Region Semifinal.
LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Joseph Rosas scored in the 67th minute to lead the Central Spartans to a 2-1 victory over the Laguna Beach Breakers in the CIF Region Semifinal.
The CIF San Diego Section Division III champions, Central, advance to the Region Final.
At halftime the match was tied at 0-0. In the second half, Laguna Beach took a 1-0 lead with Nayan Martlin hammering in a volley. Almost immediately after, Central equalized with Mishel Villanueva poking in a ball at the back post. Rosas would score the winning goal burying a 1-on-1 in the 67th minute.
"It's a great feeling being three hours away, having all my fans here from home and my teammates are celebrating with me," a smiling Rosas said after the match.
This is the first time an Imperial Valley team has reached a boy's soccer CIF Region Final. Back in 1988, Central defeated Laguna Beach 3-2 to win their program's second ever CIF section title.
There was heavy rainfall throughout the entire match. It led to a slick surface and some sloppy play from each team, but it led to a more intense environment.
"It was so much fun," Rosas said. "I was planning on it [raining]. I didn't know it was gonna be this much, but I was excited and it filled my expectations."
Central will face Pacific Ridge in the Region Final on Saturday.
