Several local teams sit atop AIA mid-season rankings, Cibola girls hoops makes statement to bump up

Lady Raiders basketball dominated Westwood Thursday to move into Open Division rankings

YUMA, Ariz., (KYMA, KECY) - On Thursday, the Arizona Interscholastic Association released its mid-season rankings for winter sports which highlighted several teams from Yuma County.

Three teams were ranked in the top 10 of their respective conferences, while others are holding their own with a definite shot.

One of the teams leading the conversation were the Cibola Lady Raiders after receiving the No. 33 spot across the entire state, leaving them just one spot out of the Open Division - which consists of the top 32 teams from 4A-6A to compete for state title at the end of the year.

While being atop one of the best 6A schools, the ranking may have fueled the Lady Raiders to make a statement. The Raiders would host Westwood on Thursday night - a team ranked 15 spots ahead of them in the state rankings.

At the end of the night, the Raiders put on a performance that may have shifted the AIA rankings heavily.

At the end of one quarter, Cibola led 19-0, en route to a 61-34 win - led by 20 points from Sierra Bomhower and 13 points each from Isabela Molina and Rori Hoffmeyer.

By Friday morning, the Lady Raiders bumped up into the "Open Division" as the #28 team in the state, while moving up to #12 in 6A.

Staying on girls hoops, the Yuma Catholic Lady Shamrocks were marked as the No. 3 team in all of 3A. With another blowout win over ALA West Foothills Friday night, the Rocks improve to 15-3.

The Shamrock boys basketball squad also earned themselves a spot in the top 10 of 3A at No. 6 with a 16-2 record after Friday night's win, as well.

To the soccer pitch, the San Luis Sidewinders boys soccer squad continues to roll over everyone, outscoring their opponents 50-4 in their eight wins. They are currently the No. 3 team in all of 6A, with their eyes on a state title after coming up just short last season.

Lastly, the Gila Ridge Lady Hawks soccer team went into Tuesday at 6-0 before falling to Pinnacle for their first loss. The Lady Hawks now sit just outside the top 10 at No. 11.
