NBC 11 Sports: Lady Raiders slay the Tigers’ perfect record, several teams shine on the mat
YUMA, Ariz., (KYMA, KECY) - Wednesday featured the game of the night in girls basketball from Yuma as the unbeaten Imperial Tigers (10-0) traveled to Cibola to take on the (6-3) Lady Raiders.
At the end of the night, the mighty Tigers would be unbeaten no more - as Cibola took over, holding Imperial to just nine points in the second half in the 45-27 win.
The Tigers went on a 7-0 run to end the first half and pull within two points, but the Raiders used the third quarter and early parts of the fourth to extend their lead and hold on.
Both teams hit the road next - Cibola heading to Mountain Ridge on Friday and Imperial going to Shadow Hills next Tuesday.
WRESTLING
Many local teams shined on the mat Wednesday, either notching a couple wins or keeping their undefeated season alive early in the season.
Starting with Gila Ridge - the boys Hawks squad took care of business at Cesar Chavez High School, beating Cesar Chavez 57-24, Brophy 78-28 and Carl Hayden 83-1. Meanwhile the girls Hawks team also beat Cesar Chavez 36-24.
The Yuma Criminals boys wrestling squad also remained undefeated, improving to 7-0 on the season - beating Odyssey 34-33, Dysart 39-35, and Kingman 66-12.
On the girls side, the Crims beat Kingman in a comeback 48-42, Dysart 54-24, but took their first loss of the year - falling to Odyssey 54-30.
Lastly, a big day in Wellton for Yuma Catholic and Antelope - who competed in a nine-team meet in the Division Four West.
Yuma Catholic stole the day by dominating all five of their matches to improve to 17-3 in duals this season.
It took a whole cast of boys to win the day, led by four falls from Javier Lopez. The Rocks beat Valley Christian 78-6, Northwest Christian 66-15, Tempe Prep 75-0, Mountainside 84-0, and Phoenix Christian 66-9.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Lastly, it was another special day at The House on the campus of Arizona Western College, as the Matador basketball teams were once again featured on ESPN+ for the NJCAA Game of the Week.
At the end of the night, the men's team walked away with an 85-68 win against the visiting Mesa Thunderbirds. Isaiah Amato led the way on the scoresheet with 21 points, while Yaxel Lendeborg did his thing on the boards, pulling down 13 rebounds in the win.
The women's team took a hard fall on their home floor for just their second loss of the year, losing 66-56 to Mesa. Maddison Zugna and Kristol Ayson led the scoring effort with 13 points each.
Both men's and women's teams hit the floor at home on Saturday against South Mountain.
