Long road trip leads to Tiger upset over San Marcos in state playoffs

Imperial uses strong first half to knock off San Marcos in Santa Barbara in second round of CIF state playoff.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. ( KYMA, KECY-TV ) - The definition of imperial is something magnificent, domineering or related to an empire. On Thursday night the Imperial girls basketball team continued its magnificent season with a 43-30 win over the San Marcos Royals in the Thunderhut on Jon Lee court in Santa Barbara.

Imperial led 12-4 after the opening quarter and 24-15 at the half and never looked back. The Lady Tigers were led by junior captain Sierra Morris who finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Amy Riley added 10 points, 8 rebounds and tallied six blocked shots. Freshman sensation Nayeli Cardona added five points and forced six steals.

The Tigers score a dozen points in each of the first three quarters and were never outscord in any quarter. With the win, the Tigers advance to the CIF State Southern Regional semi-finals for the first time in program history.

The #6 Imperial will travel to Valencia, California to face #2 Trinity Classical Academy. The Knights defeated San Bernadino 68-54. The State Regional semi-final is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. PST on Saturday.
