Shamrocks fall in return to home court

The Yuma Catholic volleyball team falls to Odyssey Institute in return to home court after COVID pause.

YUMA, Ariz. ( KYMA, KECY-TV ) - The last time the Yuma Catholic volleyball team hosted a home match was on September 16th against Imperial. While the Shamrocks escaped with a win in five sets over the Tigers, they were not able to escape team members later contracting positive COVID results.

The team quickly shut down activities and went into quarantine and stayed there until September 27th. Yuma Catholic also saw COVID make its way through the student body and combined with contract tracing, decided to relegate to online learning for the entire school until October 18th.

In the meantime, the volleyball team emerged from quarantine on Monday and quickly got back into action on Tuesday with a road win in straight sets at Tonopah Valley. Wednesday was the first time the Shamrocks played host since September 16th. The 6-1 Shamrocks welcomed the 4-6 Odyssey Institute Minotaurs into the Carol Oden McElhaney Gym.

After winning the opening set 26-24, the Shamrocks lost the next two sets 25-22 & 25-19. Yuma Catholic came back to win the fourth set 25-19 but fell in the final set 15-13.

Rian Martinez led the Shamrocks with 14 kills and 19 digs, Grace Torok added 7 aces and Payton Pikula added 25 assists. The Shamrocks next will travel to North Valley Christian this Saturday with the match scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
