Hungry for collegiate success

Former YC soccer star gets ready for college soccer.

Anthony Bazua knows how to succeed on the soccer field.

During his time with Yuma Catholic, he has played on the varsity soccer team for all 4 years, was part of 2 teams that won state championships, and helped the Shamrocks make another state title game appearance his senior season.

As a senior, he led the Rocks with 26 goals and 29 assists to close out his playing career at YC.

His efforts got the attention of Benedictine Mesa University, as he and 2 of his teammates (Michael Johnson and Edgar Gutierrez) recently signed their letter of intents with the same school.

But for Bazua, his motivation to make it to the next level were inspired by the words of a teacher during his freshman year at YC:

"It's something I thought about ever since I started high school soccer as a freshman. Because I had a teacher who told me, 'statistics show that only one of you is going to play college sports.' I had that teacher tell me that when I was a freshman in my health class. Ever since then, I thought about that moment that he told us that and it just made me hungry to be that person to sign for a college and it was really cool to be able to do that."

Since the Coronavirus Pandemic began in the Yuma area back in March, preparing for Benedictine hasn't been without it's challenges, as Bazua has looked up individual drills from his coaches and YouTube to help replicate match play or match situations.

But, like a lot of other circumstances in his life, Bazua considers the current pandemic as a blessing; an opportunity for him to get better at the game.

Bazua hopes that his goal scoring skills and high soccer IQ will help fuel his success at the next level and beyond.
