Matadors win West District title, advance to NJCAA National Tournament

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - The Arizona Western College women's soccer team added another trophy to its collection Saturday, shutting out the Salt Lake Community College Bruins 2-0 to capture the West District Championship at Matador Soccer Field.

The No. 1-ranked Matadors improved to 15-0-2 on the season, securing their spot in the NJCAA National Tournament.

Arizona Western controlled much of the match, putting pressure on the Bruins early. Abril Aguirre broke the scoreless tie in the 12th minute, finishing a pass from Kiana Knudson to give the Matadors a 1-0 advantage.

Knudson continued to create opportunities in the second half, recording her second assist of the night on a goal from Kanon Ozaki in the 58th minute to double the lead.

The Matadors have outscored opponents 64-4 through 17 games this season and will now await the NJCAA selection show Tuesday, November 10, at 4 p.m. to learn their national tournament placement and opponent.

Arizona Western is in position to earn the No. 1 overall seed, which would mark the first time in program history.

The NJCAA National Tournament will take place in Evans, Georgia, with pool play scheduled to begin next Sunday.
