Yuma Catholic tennis falls, softball advances to championship once again

Shamrock softball returns to state title for second year in a row

PHOENIX (KYMA) - It was a pivotal day on Friday for several Yuma-area programs as postseason play continued across high school and college athletics.

Yuma Catholic High School girls tennis saw its historic season come to an end in the state semifinals, falling 5-2 for its first team loss of the season.

The defeat also marked just the second time all year the Shamrocks dropped more than three matches in a meet.

Despite the loss, Yuma Catholic capped off one of the strongest seasons in program history after entering the playoffs undefeated.

The Shamrocks found better fortune on the softball diamond later in the day.

Yuma Catholic High School softball upset top-seeded Valley Christian High School 5-3 to advance to the championship game.

The victory punched the Shamrocks' ticket to the title matchup, scheduled for Monday at 7 p.m.

At the collegiate level, Arizona Western College baseball faced a difficult challenge after upsetting the Apaches on Thursday.

The Matadors fell 13-3 to the Vaqueros on Friday, pushing the team into a win-or-go-home matchup against Cochise College on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Arizona Western College softball continued its strong postseason run.

The Matadors opened tournament play with a 9-5 win over Eastern before narrowly defeating the Vaqueros behind a seven-run first inning.

Arizona Western will next face the winner between Eastern and Central. A victory in that matchup would secure the Region I title for the Matadors.
