Matador Baseball has come together to form a cohesive unit ahead of season

Despite having ballplayers from all different parts of the world, Arizona Wester has come together as one

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Arizona Western Baseball is set to their return to the diamond Tuesday for their first game of the season, and after a long off-season of meshing together as a team, first-year head coach Jon Wente believes the matadors have the tools to put together a special season.

"It's balanced team, I think we we throw strikes on the mound for the most part. We've got speed, we've got power, we got left handed bats," Wente said. "We have pretty much everything covered. So we can play a bunch of different ways. And if a pitcher's giving us a hard time, we can find other ways to score."

But before they were able to figure out the chemistry on the field, they had to come together as one off it as well.

The Matadors are built from ballplayers all over the world, representing 13 countries on the team, and it took some time to come together as one unit.

"I think our team has come together and has assimilated with all the countries," Wente said. "I think at the beginning there was some division as far as, 'Hey, I'm going to hang out with my country,' now they're hanging out with their teammate, and it doesn’t matter where they're from."

Sophomore Center Fielder Parker Husu from Canada added how this team even feels different just from one year ago.

"I think we're a bit more of a unit this year," Husu said. "Last year, we were a little bit kind of clicky, and now we’re kind of all like a team. We're all pushing the same wagon."

Thijs Helms from the Netherlands said how it's cool to see all the different countries come together and the play style shine.

"The different nationalities all show a different play style within the individuals," Helms said. "Together, we're growing as a team, so you can really see all the different styles of baseball players coming together."

For Arizona Western, if all goes well, and the play styles all come together to form a cohesive team, the Matadors could make the playoffs.

"You get into conference and then you fight like heck to try to get one of those four conference playoff spots," Wente said. "Then from there, you just want to, like I said, you want to be playing your best baseball when April and May come, and then who knows where it takes us."

The road to the playoffs begin with a double-header set to start at 12:00 p.m. against the South Mountain Community College Cougars Tuesday.
