Arizona Western pulls away from Dawson, finishes 2–1 at Winter Classic

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Arizona Western College women’s basketball team closed out the Chapman Automotive Christmas Classic with a convincing 63–34 win over Dawson Community College on Wednesday night at The House.

Arizona Western (6–6) controlled the game from start to finish, holding Dawson to single-digit scoring in each of the first three quarters before cruising to the 29-point victory. The Lady Matadors outscored Dawson 17–4 in the second quarter and 19–1 in the third to put the game out of reach.

Mable Doumbia led the way for Arizona Western, scoring 15 points on an efficient 7-of-8 shooting while adding seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Marta Vieira followed with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Chen Pan chipped in 12 points and eight boards.

Following the win, Doumbia credited the team’s chemistry and coaching for her strong start to the season. She said head coach Chelsea pushes the team daily to want more and continue improving, adding that her second year in the program has made the game feel easier after adjusting to playing in the United States last season. Doumbia also said strong communication among teammates has helped fuel the Lady Matadors’ energy on the court, noting she’s not satisfied yet and is focused on continuing to improve with hopes of playing Division One basketball.

Arizona Western shot 46.4 percent from the field and dominated the glass, outrebounding Dawson 44–29. The Lady Matadors also forced 23 turnovers, turning defensive pressure into scoring opportunities throughout the night.

Dawson Community College (2–16) was led by Hannah McDonald, who scored 11 points. The Buccaneers struggled offensively, shooting just 24.1 percent from the field and 15.4 percent from three-point range.

With the win, Arizona Western finishes the Chapman Automotive Christmas Classic with a 2–1 record. The Lady Matadors will be back in action on January 10 with a home matchup against Central Arizona.
