Matadors men’s soccer eyes redemption
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The sting of last year's national quarterfinal loss, decided in the drama of penalty kicks, still lingers for the Arizona Western College men's soccer team. But instead of dwelling on the pain, the Matadors are using it as fuel for the season ahead.
Head coach Kenny Dale, now entering his 20th season at the helm, is pushing his players through grueling summer sessions in the Yuma heat. Days start with 7 a.m. fitness, followed by weight training, team meetings, and evening scrimmages.
"If you can play in 116-degree weather, you can play anywhere," Dale said. "They're becoming men right here."
Dale's leadership is backed by an impressive resume 329 career wins, four consecutive national tournament appearances, and this summer's inaugural NJCAA Coaches Legacy Award. He's confident this year's group has the talent and toughness to make another deep run.
The roster blends experience and fresh faces. Returning defenders and new goalkeepers form a sturdy back line, while incoming freshmen bring energy and skill. Calexico graduate Axel Gonzalez says joining the Matadors is an opportunity he's dreamed of.
"It's a blessing," Gonzalez said. "The program's high-level, you get to know different cultures and enjoy the game I grew up on."
Veterans like sophomore midfielder Daniel Coke are embracing leadership roles, ensuring newcomers quickly adapt to the team’s expectations.
"Keeping everyone on the same page is important," Coke said.
Sophomore defender Peter LeBlanc is already focused on the end goal.
"What we do today is going to count in November hopefully we go to the final," he said.
With their eyes set on a national title, the Matadors open the season united by one mission turn last year's heartbreak into this year's triumph.
