AWC’s Suarez commits to play DI hoops at Weber State

Suarez leaves behind a strong legacy as he becomes the latest Matador to make the jump to the Division I level.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Edwin Suarez dominated on the court over the course of his two years at Arizona Western, earning ACCAC Player of the Year honors in 2025.

The Dominican Republic native has now signed with Weber State, where he hopes to become the next Matador to make waves at the Division I level.

"I moved to the U.S. to achieve this dream and it's actually coming true now," Suarez said. "I'm just trying to get to work and I want to see how it is in the next level."

Suarez joins a Weber State team that struggled last season. The Wildcats went 12-22 and finished second to last in the Big Sky.

"The Big Sky is really good league," AWC head coach Kyle Isaacs said. "I think Edwin's, unique talent, his toughness and his skills for finding the ball and rebounding will really translate there."

In his freshman year at AWC, Suarez averaged 9 points and 8.8 rebounds per-game. As a sophomore, he took his game to another level. Suarez put up over 13 points a night, along with 8.7 boards, while shooting an efficient 53.7% from the field and 40% from beyond the arc.

"When Edwin came in here as a freshman, instantly we knew he was a really tough dude," Isaacs said. "Over the course of the two seasons, he grew into a tougher hombre than we even expected."

Off the court, Suarez became a beloved leader and left a profound impact on the AWC campus.

"Edwin was the 'Don' of the dorms," Isaacs said. "Everyone likes Edwin. He runs all the Spanish speaking students over there. Every time you look at him, he's got a great smile. He'll definitely be missed. Not only within the program, but campus wide."

"It's just my personality," Suarez said. "I get along with everybody. I'm always smiling. I'm always happy. Nothing can really make me mad. I feel like people love me and I love people. I'm gonna miss out all my people [out here]."

This weekend Suarez will be competing against some of other top JUCO players from around the country in the NJCAA All-Star game in Las Vegas.

Suarez hopes to become the second straight matador to win the games MVP. Last year Edwin's close friend and current Lamar guard AJ Marmolejos took home the award.
