AWC Baseball completes sweep against Community Christian with 11-1 win in Palm Springs
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - The Matadors wrapped up a dominant road trip with an 11-1 win over Community Christian College on Saturday, capping off a clean sweep in Palm Springs.
Arizona Western College (34-17, 18-14 in conference) wasted no time getting on the board and never looked back. Sophomore Andres Ontiveros led the way at the plate, going two-for-four with a double, a triple, and two RBIs. His big day helped the Matadors run away with the series finale in just six innings.
AWC opened up a 4-0 lead before the Saints scratched across their lone run in the fourth inning. But the Matadors quickly shut the door, tacking on three runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to put it out of reach.
Javier Diaz added to the damage, driving in two with a double, while starter Sergio Lugo turned in a strong performance on the mound. Lugo went five innings, allowing just one run and striking out six.
The Matadors are back in action Thursday, April 24, when they host Central Arizona for a noon makeup game at Walt Kammann Baseball Field, though AWC will be the designated road team.
