Arizona Western athletics open home schedule with thrilling weekend

Matador men's soccer win in overtime, women's soccer notches 17 goals and volleyball storms back to win in five sets

YUMA, Ariz. ( KYMA, KECY-TV ) - Athletics are back and in full force on the Arizona Western College campus. Last Friday and Saturday the Matadors volleyball team hosted the Chapman Volleyball Tournament.

On Friday night the Lady Matadors held off Garden City in five sets.

On Saturday afternoon the Lady Matadors dropped the first two sets to Southern Nevada before rallying to win the next three for a thrilling 3-2 win.

The Lady Matadors hit the road on Friday to Prescott for the Dalton Overstreet Invitational, taking on both New Mexico Military Institute at 9:00 am and Lee College at 1:00 pm at the Walraven Gymnasium on the campus of Yavapai College.

This week, Arizona Western Lady Matadors volleyball player Daniela Jimenez was named ACCAC DI Offensive Player of the Week and Natalia Slazynska was named ACCAC DI Defensive Player of the Week.

On Saturday night The Arizona Western Lady Matadors opened their season by scoring 17 goals, five of them from Ashley Martinez, in a 17-1 win over Southern Nevada.

In the early soccer game on Saturday, Arizona Western men's soccer team defeated Southern Nevada 3-2 in overtime. Nozomu Kamei recorded his second two-goal game of the season, scoring the overtime winner.

The Matadors will next host Laramie County this Sunday, September 4th. Due to forecasted temperatures, game time has been changed to 10:00 am at Matador Soccer Field.

The Matadors' will host Laramie County Community College in a battle of two national tournament teams from a year ago. The Matadors started the season ranked #2 but after an early season loss, enter play ranked as the No. 10 team in the latest NJCAA DI Men's Soccer poll while the Golden Eagles are currently receiving votes.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for seniors. Arizona Western College students get in free with a student identification card.
