(CNN, KYMA) - Friday is National Sports Day.

National Day Calendar said it helped create the event to celebrate athletics. This includes by highlighting fans, families and competitors.

The calendars points to evidence suggesting sports date back thousands of years.

Now, that tradition continues on fields, courts, rinks and more around the world.
