Steve Belichick, the son of football coach Bill Belichick, resigning following internal investigation

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (NBC, KYMA) - Bill Belichick's son is resigning from the UNC Chapel Hill football program following an investigation into the team, according to the school.

Steve Belichick has been on medical leave for more than a month, and will officially resign on October 27th when his leave ends.

The resignation comes after an internal investigation that found actions within the football program demonstrated, "A disregard for Carolina's values and standards of conduct."

Specifics about his leave haven't been publicly disclosed by the university.

Outside investigators, hired by UNC, had questioned people close to the program about whether Steve Belichick had used drugs on the job, or whether he provided drugs to at least one player.

According to a statement from the school, the investigation also found that these actions were isolated in scope and not a systemic failure.

His departure comes two weeks after the resignation of general manager Michael Lombardi, who is also a long-time friend of Bill Belichick.
