Yuma Special Olympics hosts powerlifting competition

KYMA

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Yuma Special Olympics athletes gathered for a regional powerlifting competition hosted at 4th Avenue Gym in the Foothills. The event marked the fifth time the facility has welcomed competitors.

More than 40 athletes from Yuma and Kingman participated in the competition, demonstrating their strength and skill across squats, deadlifts and bench press. In front of an enthusiastic crowd, each athlete had the opportunity to showcase their abilities.

Justin Haile, owner of 4th Avenue Gym, reflected on the significance of the event and his connection to the athletes.

"Ultimately it's about the athletes," he said. "Five years ago I went to a Breakfast of Champions, and at Breakfast of Champions, that's when my heart melted for these guys, and it's just the bigger picture is them, and, so, this is our 5th annual here at the gym and we're we're honored to have them."

Participation in the regional event also carried competitive significance, as athletes earned qualification for the upcoming state competition in Glendale, scheduled for May 7-9.
