Diamondbacks salvage four-game series with extra innings win

ESPN

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - The Arizona Diamondbacks pulled out a walk-off win on Sunday, topping the Atlanta Braves 6–5 in 10 innings.

Atlanta struck first in the opening inning when Drake Baldwin launched a solo shot to right-center off Brandon Pfaadt, giving the Braves a quick 1–0 advantage. Arizona answered immediately in the bottom half, as Geraldo Perdomo lifted a ball to left-center that resulted in a sacrifice fly. Despite a diving grab by Mike Yastrzemski, Ketel Marte crossed the plate to tie the game at 1–1.

The Diamondbacks broke through in the fourth inning thanks to Ildemaro Vargas, who ripped a triple to right field, driving in two runs and giving Arizona a 3–1 lead. But Baldwin continued his breakout performance in the fifth, lining a single to left that brought home Jorge Mateo and helped even the score at 3–3.

Arizona regained the lead in the sixth when Nolan Arenado dropped a single into center field, scoring Corbin Carroll to make it 4–3. An inning later, Carroll added to the advantage himself, blasting a triple to right that plated Jorge Barrosa and extended the lead to 5–3.

Refusing to go quietly, the Braves mounted a late push. Trailing 5–4 in the ninth, Baldwin delivered yet again, smoking a game-tying single up the middle to score Mateo and knot the game at 5–5, capping a terrific night for the young catcher.

But the Diamondbacks had the final say in extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th, Marte came through in the clutch, driving a walk-off double to right field that brought home Barrosa and sealed a 6–5 victory for Arizona.
