Sunrise Optimist hosts pickleball tournament fundraiser for Special Olympics Yuma

KYMA

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Special Olympics Yuma partnered with the Sunrise Optimist Club to host a fundraiser supporting local athletes.

The weekend-long Sunrise Optimist Pickleball Fundraiser is taking place at Cocopah RV and Golf Resort in Yuma, bringing together players of all ages to compete while supporting a charitable cause. Participants from multiple generations took part in the tournament, highlighting the inclusive nature of the rapidly growing sport.

This marked the third year of the event, which has continued to expand since its inception. Organizers noted that last year’s tournament doubled the amount of money raised during the inaugural event, reflecting both increased participation and community support.

Tournament Director Elizabeth Huyck said pickleball’s accessibility is a major factor in the event’s success.

“It's something that all levels can play, and the turnout has been magnificent,” Huyck said.

Sunrise Optimist Club President Denise Davis emphasized the importance of supporting programs that directly benefit the local community.

“They do phenomenal things within our community, and all this money stays in Yuma County, so it's wonderful,” Davis said.

Organizers estimated this year’s fundraiser would bring in close to the same amount raised last year, with proceeds expected to reach up to $10,000 for Special Olympics Yuma.
