Sidewinders bounce Tolleson from boy’s soccer Conference 6A playoffs

SAN LUIS, Ariz. (KYMA) - After falling in the second round of the open championship bracket, the Sidewinders took the first step towards a Conference 6A championship with a 2-1 win over the Tolleson Wolverines.

Six-seeded San Luis allowed eleven-seeded Tolleson to hang around to start the match, with the Wolverines on the attacking end of the pitch for the majority of the first half.

Before heading into halftime, the Sidewinders were able to inject some energy into themselves with a few solid trips towards the box.

"I think we had a slow start at the beginning of the first half, but the end of the first half was really good, and all we said was continue doing that, continue like we ended at the first half, and that's what they did... we controlled the midfield, we put the ball on the ground and I think that that's what helped us."

It led to a noticeable difference. The Sidewinders were a lot more dominant in the second half and broke the scoreless affair on a long distance snipe from midfielder Carlos Gamez in the 54th minute.

A yellow card gave Tolleson a chance to tie things up in the 66th minute and goalkeeper Gael Obregon was unable to make a stop.

San Luis was able to bounce back swiftly, with a header from forward Erick Benavidez on an assist from Rodrigo Ortega in the 69th minute.

The Sidewinders were able to stave off the Wolverines for the final stretch of play to secure a first-round win.

The victory sets up the season's fourth installment of San Luis vs. Kofa, with the Kings leading the season series 2-1. This edition will take place at The Kingdom at 6pm on Saturday.
