Nick Mangold, former New York Jets player, dies at 41

(NBC, KYMA) - The sports world is mourning a heartbreaking loss as former New York Jets center Nick Mangold has passed away at the age of 41.

Word of Mangold's death comes less than two weeks after making a public plea on social media for a kidney donation.

A statement from the Jets confirmed the seven-time pro-bowler died Saturday night from complications of kidney disease.

In an online post earlier this month, Mangold wrote that he was diagnosed with a genetic defect in 2006 that led to chronic kidney disease.

He was on dialysis while waiting for a transplant.

In 2006, Mangold was drafted out of Ohio State by the Jets and spent 11 seasons, his entire NFL career, with the team.

He retired after the 2016 season, and in 2022, received the honor of being enshrined into the Jets' Ring of Honor.

Mangold is survived by his wife and four children.
