Yuma Special Olympics swim meet takes place at Marcus Swimming Pool

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Dozens of local athletes showcased their skills in the swimming pool this weekend at the Yuma Special Olympics Swim Meet.

Around 60 swimmers of all experience levels competed at Marcus Swimming Pool, taking part in events such as the 15-meter walk and the 50-meter swim.

The energy from the packed crowd matched the enthusiasm of the athletes, making for a memorable event.

"This is probably the biggest turnout we've had in years," said Kelly Smith, Head of Delegation for Yuma Special Olympics. "We have a lot of athletes coming out. The group is growing, so it's a pretty good group today."

Although medals were awarded to the top finishers in each event, the day was less about rankings and more about participation, encouragement, and camaraderie.

"I'm so excited to compete with my whole friends," said one athlete. "I'm excited to see people who are my ability swim together and cheer other teammates on."

The athletes not only gave it their all in the pool but also on the sidelines, cheering for one another and adding to the spirited atmosphere.

Athletes who competed now have the chance to advance to a statewide swim tournament in Surprise, Arizona.
