Cibola hosts Desert Southwest schools at Wetlands Invitational

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Cibola High School played host to nine high schools from across the Desert Southwest on Saturday at the Wetlands Invitational, a cross-country meet held at West Wetlands Park in Yuma.

More than 200 runners took part in the event, marking one of the largest turnouts the race has seen in recent years.

Cibola cross country head coach Amy Sautter, who organized the event, expressed her excitement over the successful day, especially after weather concerns earlier in the week.

"Today as a whole couldn't have went any better," Sautter said. "With the storm hitting us two days ago, it put some damper on things...we were wondering how our course was gonna look, but I have an amazing support staff."

The host team had much more to celebrate than just a smooth event. Cibola placed several runners in the top fifteen in both the boys and girls varsity races, culminating in a first-place finish for the team overall.

Cibola also earned first-place individual finishes in the boys and girls varsity races.

With strong early-season performances and a well-executed meet, Cibola's cross country team looks poised for a competitive fall.
