President Trump urges renaming of two sports teams
(CNN, KYMA/KECY) - President Donald Trump enjoys sports and on Sunday, he urged two professional sports teams who recently changed their names to change them back.
President Trump said the NFL's Washington Commanders should go back to being called the Washington Redskins, and the MLB's Cleveland Guardians should change their name back to the Cleveland Indians.
Both teams changed their names years ago because their monikers were considered offensive to native americans.
The president wrote on social media that times have changed, and he said Native Americans support his position.
In a follow-up post on social media, Trump wrote, "My statement on the Washington Redskins has totally blown up, but only in a very positive way," before adding he "may put a restriction on them that if they don't change the name back" to the team's original name.
He also claimed Matt Dolan, owner of the Guardians, "lost three elections in a row" because of the name change while adding, "If he changed the name back to the Cleveland Indians, he might actually win an election."
