Two Yuma Catholic girl’s soccer players commit to Nelson University
Janessa Lugo and Genessey Melendrez will be taking their talents to the next level together, continuing a trend of local athletes making their way to Nelson's brand new program
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - When Nelson University kicks off their inaugural women's soccer season this Fall, their roster won't be short on Yuma pride.
On Wednesday, Yuma Catholic girl's soccer players Janessa Lugo and Genessey Melendrez signed their letters of intent to join the Warriors program.
“It’s a really family oriented school, and I (like) that it’s really close to home too," Melendrez said.
Melendrez and Lugo have been playing with each other since their club team days as well, which Lugo says will help them with this next step.
"I think since we've been playing for a long time in club, I think it's better for not only for me but for the program," Lugo said.
The duo joins three other Yuma County players joining Nelson, including Kofa's Valeria Andrade, San Luis' Alizey Hernandez, and Cibola's Destiny Mendoza.
Aside from the local connections, the school also just felt like a natural fit for Lugo after her experience at Yuma Catholic.
“It made me feel like home, which is YC, and, being able to be in a small school, and having not many changes," Lugo said.
Melendrez also gave praise for the Yuma Catholic program in helping me get to this point.
"I think gave me good exposure, and it gave me opportunities to play with my friends and just get me to the next level," Melendrez said.
