Cibola wins big in Yuma District Meet, Aaryon Kenney becomes top long jumper in Arizona

The Raiders defend their home turf against all local competition, as senior Aaryon Kenney became Arizona's top long jumper in the process

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - If home track advantage exists, the Cibola Raiders proved it on Monday afternoon.

The Raiders walked away with overall points wins for both boys and girls in the Yuma District Meet.

On the girls' side, the Lady Raiders totalled 179 points, followed by Gila Ridge with 133, then Kofa at 126.

It was the same top three for the boys, with Cibola scoring 260, followed by Gila Ridge with 118, and Kofa at 88.

Among the top performers for Cibola was senior Aaryon Kenney, who placed first in both the 100 meter dash and long jump events.

Following his 11.12 second win in the 100 meter, Kenney then put up a 23 foot 6 inch distance in the long jump.

The senior's long jump puts him at first in Arizona, a feat Kenney says he accomplished in part because of his 100 meter performance.

"I was just feeling good after the 100 all the adrenaline so when I planted my foot and I felt myself rise up, I was like, oh yeah this is gonna be really far," Kenney said.

Kenney came into the meet knowing exactly what records he wanted to reach.

"Literally all of today, I was telling myself, 24 (feet), 10 seconds," Kenney said.

While not quite hitting those exact numbers, the stats put up did create new personal bests for Kenney in both events.

Monday's performance also comes less than a month before state championships, which take place from May 16-17.

"It’s a great feeling," Kenney said.

Just two more meets remain for the Raiders before state championships, with their next one coming Friday April 25.
