Rams wrestler Alaina Jaime signs letter of intent to Ottawa University

Jaime becomes the first Antelope girl's athlete since 1970 to sign a letter of intent to play a sport at the next level

WELLTON, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - To find the last time Antelope Union High School was able to send a female athlete to the next level, you'd have to go all the way back to 1970.

On Thursday however, the 55 year drought was put to an end.

Rams wrestler Alaina Jaime signed her letter of intent to join the Ottawa University program in Surprise, Ariz.

"It's small, I really like the campus, it's more my style," Jaime said.

In front of friends, family, and fellow students inside the Antelope gym, Jaime was honored with a ceremony as she put pen to paper.

To become the first girl in over five decades to make it out of Antelope athletics with a college opportunity has long been a goal for Jaime.

"I really wanted to do something for this school, whether it was for wrestling or any other sport," Jaime said.

Also playing volleyball and softball during her time at Antelope, the mats have always been Jaime's favorite place to compete.

"My dad's always been a coach, so I was just in there with him," Jaime said.

New Rams athletic director Rhona Taylor says Jaime signing should be an inspiration for other students.

"That's just going to jump start the future of the kids, knowing what's possible for them," Taylor said.

As for what she wants to pursue after college, Jaime says she hopes to become a veterinarian one day.

"Ever since I was a kid I've loved animals, they do so much for us, that's something I want to do," Jaime said.
