Arizona Western dominates Community Christian in doubleheader sweep

Matadors explode for 37 runs in back-to-back five-inning wins

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Arizona Western Matadors put on an offensive clinic Saturday, overwhelming Community Christian College with a 22-0 shutout in Game 1 and an 18-1 rout in Game 2 at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.

Both games ended in just five innings as the Matadors extended their strong start to the season.

Game 1: Matadors Roll with Early Explosion

Arizona Western (18-5, 10-5) wasted no time setting the tone, putting up seven runs in the first inning and following with nine more in the second. By the time the dust settled, they had racked up 22 runs on 20 hits, shutting down the winless Saints (0-18, 0-18).

Gregorys Mateo led the charge, going 4-for-4 with three doubles and four RBIs, while Bronson Neave belted a home run and drove in six runs on a 2-for-4 performance. Nathan Houston added three RBIs, and Andres Ontiveros contributed three hits with two RBIs.

On the mound, Sergio Lugo, Diego Evans, and Isaac Camacho combined for a dominant shutout, holding the Saints hitless.

Game 2: Power Surge Continues

The Matadors picked up right where they left off in Game 2, launching four home runs in an 18-1 victory. Dan Kawanishi put on a show, going 4-for-4 with two triples, a home run, and five RBIs.

Arizona Western jumped ahead with eight runs in the first, adding six more in the third before sealing the win with two in the fourth. Luca Hoerger, Gerardo Castro, and Mateo all went deep, with Hoerger finishing with three RBIs.

On the mound, Aiden Schmidgall struck out six batters over four innings before Felix Brunner closed it out with a scoreless fifth.

What's Next

Arizona Western is back at home on Monday facing Asian Breeze in a single-game matchup. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
